Why does your peak matter more than your total?

Because a shop full of motors can cross a utility's demand threshold on a modest monthly total. Demand is measured as your highest sustained draw, so starting a compressor, a lift and a welder within the same window can set a peak far above your average draw. Once you are demand metered, part of your bill is priced in kilowatts, and no supply rate you shop for will bring that part down.

A motor's shaft power in kilowatts is its horsepower multiplied by 0.746, and the draw at the wall is higher because no motor is perfectly efficient. Wall figures assume a motor efficiency of 88 percent, which is a stated assumption for illustration rather than a measurement of your equipment. Motors also draw considerably more than these figures during the moment of starting, which is why several pieces of kit starting together matters more than the same kit running together.

What to do with the number. If your total plausible simultaneous draw is well under your utility's threshold, forget demand entirely and shop purely on the supply rate. Divide the total dollars on your bill by the kilowatt-hours billed for the same period and multiply by 100 to get cents per kWh. Then look separately at any charge priced in kW, because that one is set by your peak and by your utility's tariff rather than by the retail provider you buy supply from.

  1. Take the total amount due on your latest bill, setting aside any late fee or balance brought forward.
  2. Find the kilowatt-hours billed for the same service period, usually printed alongside the meter read dates.
  3. Divide the dollars by the kilowatt-hours and multiply by 100 to get your all-in rate in cents per kWh, delivery charges included.
  4. Look for any charge priced in kW rather than kWh and total it separately, because that part of the bill responds to your peak and not to your supply rate.
  5. Run the same calculation on a busy month and a slow one, since a demand charge set by a single hard hour can carry across into months when the shop was quiet.
  6. Check when your term expires, because a contract that ran out unnoticed normally reverts to a month-to-month holdover rate.

Not the supply rate itself. Three-phase service affects which delivery rate class your utility puts you in and how your equipment draws power, but the price per kilowatt-hour you agree with a retail provider is quoted the same way either way. What three-phase usually signals is a shop with enough motor load to be worth checking for a demand charge.

Why doesn't my shop's electric bill jump much in summer?

Because most of your load is not weather driven. CBECS found only a quarter of service buildings use packaged air conditioning, and in a shop where the bay doors stand open there is little point cooling the space at all, so your bill tracks how busy the bays were rather than how hot the month was. A flatter profile across the year is an advantage when you go to lock a rate.

The method takes the building-level electricity intensity percentiles EIA CBECS 2018 publishes for the Service principal building activity, being 3.0 kWh per square foot per year at the 25th percentile, 6.3 at the median and 10.8 at the 75th, multiplies each by a regional adjustment factor and divides by twelve to give a monthly figure per square foot.

The regional adjustment is 1.087, calculated as the West South Central census division intensity of 13.7 kWh per square foot per year divided by the all-buildings figure of 12.6, both from the same table. West South Central covers Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Applying an all-buildings regional ratio to a single activity assumes the regional effect is broadly similar across activities, which is an assumption rather than a published result.

The Service activity is a close fit for the businesses on this page rather than an approximation. EIA reports that vehicle storage or maintenance buildings account for 33 percent of energy consumption in service buildings and vehicle service or repair buildings a further 27 percent, so these building types dominate the published figures. EIA also reports that packaged air conditioners were the most common cooling equipment in service buildings at 25 percent, which is the basis for the statement on this page that air conditioning is a smaller share of the load here than in other commercial categories.

Two limitations apply. CBECS does not publish separate intensities for individual shop types, so no shop type on this page is assigned a figure of its own and each is positioned within the published range qualitatively. CBECS 2018 also predates the pandemic and any change in operating patterns since.

The horsepower to kilowatt figures are arithmetic, using the standard conversion of 0.746 kilowatts per horsepower for shaft power and a stated motor efficiency assumption of 88 percent for the draw at the wall. They describe nameplate ratings and are not a measurement of any particular installation. Starting current is higher than running current and is not represented in that table.
